When it comes to pouring concrete, a fine day and all hands-on deck are crucial! This is exactly what happened in late February at the Pet Refuge shelter site.

The completion of the concrete slab for the shelter is a significant milestone for Pet Refuge and its build partners; Signature Homes, The Lindsay Foundation and Trillian Trust.

89,000 litres of concrete from 12 trucks was poured to create the 267 square metre slab for the shelter, which once complete will temporarily house 24 dogs, 35 cats and 30 smaller animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and birds.

“This is a great achievement for the team and a big step towards New Zealand’s first shelter dedicated to pets affected by domestic violence", founder Julie Chapman says. “There has been a monumental effort from all involved to get us to this point, and despite record breaking months of unwanted rain last year, we are now making good progress.
"We are committed to opening our doors in early 2021 as we know how crucial our services will be to many families and their pets escaping domestic violence. ”
